Neuropathology is the study of diseases of the nervous system, and typically includes the laboratory analysis of tissue samples for personalized diagnosis or forensic investigations. Neuropathologists are the physicians/scientists who provide cellular and molecular diagnoses and conduct research in this field; common areas of study are brain tumors, Alzheimer disease, stroke, muscular dystrophies, infections, and brain development. Our association is the AANP and our official journal is the Journal of Neuropathology and Experimental Neurolog..... Read More

Message from our President

Welcome to the website of the American Association of Neuropathologists.

We have entered the era of genomics and precision diagnostics, and our field is evolving rapidly.  At the 2017 meeting of the AANP, we heard about the WHO classification of brain tumors and the impact of next generation sequencing and DNA methylation, and advances in sequencing in CNS infections and neuromuscular diseases. In addition, new advances in brain development and autism were presented, as well as a review of electron microscopy of muscle, therapeutic approaches to the synucleinopathies, the new WHO pituitary tumor classification, and Zika encephalomyelopathy.  All of these presentations are posted under Meetings for your information.

We’ve just begun our planning for the 2018 meeting in Louisville, KY, to be held June 7-10.  We’ll start with a special course on Thursday, have our traditional scientific sessions and named lectures on Friday and Saturday, review the diagnostic slide session cases on Saturday evening, and finish up with the Presidential Symposium on Sunday.

I look forward to seeing you at the meeting in Louisville, June 7-10, 2018.

Elizabeth Cochran, M.D.
President, AANP
